Haseltine Lake was proud to attend the UK finals of FameLab last week and watch the UK’s most talented science communicators compete to be crowned the winner.

FameLab UK winner

Emer Maguire from Queen’s University Belfast won the UK final in the tough-fought communications competition which took place at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre on Wednesday, April 22.

Emer, who won both the judges’ and the audience vote, will now go on to represent the UK at the International finals against 26 other countries at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June.

Emer’s talk was about the hormones associated with the different stages of love and, in keeping with the rules of FameLab, she had just three minutes to win over the audience before facing a panel of judges for further interrogation.

The 2015 final was judged by Kat Arney, an award-winning blogger for Cancer Research UK, as well as a freelance science writer and broadcaster whose work has featured on BBC Radio 4, The Naked Scientists and more; Mark Miodownik, materials engineer, Professor of Materials and Society at UCL and Director of the Institute of Making - a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made-world; and Simon Watt, a science communicator, best known as the head of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society and a presenter on the BAFTA winning Channel 4 series Inside Nature’s Giants.

Lesley Evans, Chief Executive at Haseltine Lake, said: “It has been fantastic to follow the progress of the candidates right the way through to the UK final. All of the candidates presented extremely well and are clearly very talented communicators, firmly living up to their titles of regional champions!

“We are thrilled to have been a part of FameLab as sponsors - it is a truly inspiring competition that showcases the brightest young minds of science and engineering across the UK, helping to make these subjects both accessible and enjoyable.”

Mark Miodownik said of the competition: “It was insanely difficult to choose a winner. This year’s competition was an incredibly high standard. The talks covered an amazing array of subjects and they were all delivered brilliantly.”

Winner Emer said: “I’m really shocked to have won. The other contestants were all so good. I’m looking forward to getting to Cheltenham Science Festival to compete in the international final.” Emer’s interview about her participation can be found on the FameLab YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBHPBO7ii9k&feature=youtu.be

FameLab aims to discover engaging, up-and-coming scientists and engineers who can inspire people to see the world from a new perspective.

The competition is the brainchild of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival and the 2015 the UK competition is supported by Haseltine Lake, EDF Energy and The Royal Society of Chemistry.
